Why People Why 10/02/2012

Why on earth do some people think it is acceptable to stand in your personnal space on the trains?! Yes I know that obviously at peak hours people have to get to and from work but at peak hours there tend to be more damn trains.
I am sure you have all suffered this in some capacity. I have done the morning and afternoon commute in London and Sydney and let me tell you I think they are pretty much as bad as each other, at a push London shades it for being worse.
The worst I think I have seen is when I used to get on the train at bank station in London at about 530pm. The trains would already have come through busy stations such as Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus so by the time they get to Bank they are pretty full but still some standing room with enough space for people to actually breath without inhaling a nostril full of armpit or shirt. Instead of a few people getting on so that the journey home would be reasonably comfortable, commuters would cram themselves on so much that peopples faces would be squashed up against the door. Imagine when you press your face up agains the glass of a window, well that is what I saw as the train pulled out of the staition, each doorway had other people squashed against it with all manner of weird expressions forced on their face, it made for some good watching, until the last carriage on the train where there were spare seats (the lucky buggers).
Now I have a tip for those people that have to force themselves onto a bit of floor space not wide enough to put a hamster on....wait for the next one! It will be 2 minutes, my god that took some thinking. It has been known to see people run down the escalator, turn the corner as expertly as a 200m runner swinging into the home straight, sprint for the open door, tongue lolling out the mouth as they get excited about arriving home, leap onto the carriage only to find that it is completely and utterly full, you wouldn't be able to fit a strand of hair let alone another person on there and bounce back out landing on their back with legs in the air ant style. DESERVED. It is ALWAYS good to laugh at those people., They would have made your journey miserable and uncomfortable when they could have waited 2 whole minutes and had relative comort.
In saying that though at least in London they have enough decency to let people off the train before they start to board it, the same can't be said for some Sydneysiders. As the throng of people disembark from the bowels of the carriage a similar size throng attempts to get on AT THE SAME TIME. If you are not getting off at that stop my god its a spectacle. People jostle, push and shout at each other and I am pretty damn sure I have seen people go through peoples legs to get on (I may have dreamt that but I like to think it happened). Then just as the doors close and you get ready to enjoy a hot, sweaty, uncomfortable journey home you see them. They are running down the stairs, they take the turn at the bottom of the stairs as experctly as a 200m runner swinging into the home straight, sprint for the open door, tongue lolling out the mouth as they get excited about arriving home and you prey that the doors shut before they take the leap of faith to that little bit of floor space not big enough for a hamster to comfortably stand. That is the thought for today, tune in tomorrow for something new..
